  • A species of anaerobic, Gram-negative, diplococci shaped bacteria assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria. This species is oxidase positive, reduces nitrite, but not nitrate, produces carbonic anhydrase, does not hydrolyze tributyrin, is non-hemolytic, and does not produce acid from glucose, maltose, fructose, sucrose, mannose, or lactose. N. cinerea is commensal in the human nasal and oropharyngeal tract, and is considered non-pathogenic, but can become pathogenic in immunocompromised individuals.
