  • A pteridine that is a metabolite of guanine triphosphate (GTP) and a precursor for biopterin. Neopterin is released from interferon-gamma (IFNg) stimulated macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs); therefore, urine or serum levels may be used as a marker of immune system activation.
