(morbus scheuermann) A developmental growth retardation of the vertebral end plates that may lead to secondary destruction of the vertebral end plates and protrusion of the nucleus pulposus into the vertebral body (so called Schmorl's nodes as seen on x-rays).

(scheuermann disease) A type of juvenile osteochondrosis affecting the fibrocartilaginous disc (INTERVERTEBRAL DISC) in the thoracic or thoracolumbar region of the SPINE. It is characterized by a forward concave SPINAL CURVATURE or KYPHOSIS.

(juvenile osteochondrosis of spine) A disorder characterized by osteochondrosis of the vertebral epiphyses in childhood.

Scheuermann disease is an osteochondrosis that causes localized changes in vertebral bodies, leading to backache and kyphosis. Diagnosis is with spinal x-rays. Treatment usually involves only reduction of weight bearing and strenuous activity.

Scheuermann, or Scheuermann's, disease (juvenile kyphosis) is a deformity in the thoracic or thoracolumbar spine in which pediatric patients have an increased kyphosis along with backache and localized changes in the vertebral bodies. See the image below.

Familial Scheuermann disease is characterized by kyphotic deformity of the spine that develops in adolescence.
