  • A non taxonomic group of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes and the genus Streptococcus. They produces acetoin, hydrolyze arginine and esculin, ferment trehalose, lactose, salicin and sucrose, expresses Lancefield antigens A, C, F, G, or N and are mixed hemolytic ability. Bacteria in the S. milleri group are pathogenic, causing periodontitis and purulent infections.
